Quercetin and Bromelain in Nervecept: 8 mg Each Per Capsule

Quick answer

Quercetin and bromelain in Nervecept are 8 mg each per capsule, one capsule a day. One small safety trial tested quercetin at 500 to 2,000 mg a day, so 8 mg is about 1.6% of its lowest dose. We found no studied daily dose for bromelain on the source we checked.

What are quercetin and bromelain in Nervecept?

Quercetin and bromelain in Nervecept are two of the smallest label lines: 8 mg of quercetin from Sophora japonica bud and 8 mg of bromelain from pineapple stem in each capsule.

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant properties. Bromelain is an enzyme from the stem of Ananas comosus, the pineapple plant.

Together they add 16 mg, about 2% of the roughly 699 mg of listed ingredients in a capsule.

The sales page describes quercetin as a flavonoid found in various plant foods, known for its antioxidant properties. That description is accurate. It does not name bromelain at all, so this line appears only on the bottle. (Nervecept sales page) The whole panel is on the Supplement Facts page.

Dose check02

What dose of quercetin and bromelain was studied compared with Nervecept?

One small trial tested quercetin at 500 to 2,000 mg a day, so the 8 mg in Nervecept is about 1.6% of its lowest dose. No studied daily dose for bromelain was found.

Because the bromelain source gives no dose, there is no share to calculate. We show n/a, not zero and not a guess. These studies tested the ingredients alone, not Nervecept.

A safety trial is not a benefit trial

The quercetin doses came from a trial built to see whether people could tolerate them. A tolerated dose says nothing about whether a lower dose does anything. See label amount vs studied dose for how the other lines compare.

Research03

What did the quercetin trial find?

One small trial randomized 9 patients at a single center to quercetin at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 mg a day, each for one week. No serious adverse events occurred. (Han et al., BMJ Open Resp Res 2020)

Liver and kidney function stayed in range. The authors say safety should be confirmed over at least 6 months.

The one quercetin trial we cite
DetailWhat the paper reports
Size9 patients, too few for statistical analysis
Doses500, 1,000 and 2,000 mg a day, one week each
ResultNo serious adverse events; tolerated up to 2,000 mg a day
Not testedJoint or nerve problems; no drug interactions reported

It is one small trial, not a body of evidence, so we cannot say studies show anything about quercetin and nerves. We found no trial in a nerve condition.

Research04

Is there a studied dose of bromelain?

No. The NCCIH bromelain page we cite gives no dose, so we found no studied daily dose to compare with the 8 mg in Nervecept.

Oral bromelain has been studied for sinusitis and for pain and swelling after wisdom tooth removal. NCCIH says there are few studies and not enough high-quality research to recommend it for sinusitis. (NCCIH, Bromelain)

Taken by mouth it seems well tolerated. Stomach upset and diarrhea are the most common side effects.

Little is known about bromelain in pregnancy or breastfeeding. The page names no specific drug interactions, but it advises talking to a health care provider if you take any medicine, because some herbs and medicines interact harmfully. (NCCIH, Bromelain) We found no bromelain trial in nerve conditions either.

Cautions05

Does bromelain thin the blood, and does quercetin interact with medicines?

We cannot say bromelain thins the blood, because the NCCIH page names no interactions. We also cannot say quercetin is free of them, because its trial did not test for them.

Nervecept's glucosamine and chondroitin have been linked to more bleeding risk with warfarin, so ask about the whole capsule. (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin)

Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed. A supplement is no reason to stop or change it.

  • Blood thinner or diabetes medicine: ask your pharmacist before the first capsule.
  • Pineapple allergy: ask an allergist first.
  • Surgery coming: tell the surgeon and anesthesia team about every supplement. (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely)
  • Pregnant, nursing or under 18: the label asks you to consult a physician.

The blood thinner guide and the side effects page cover the rest.

Nerve claims06

Do quercetin and bromelain help nerves?

We found no trial of quercetin or bromelain in a nerve condition, and no supplement treats neuropathy.

At 8 mg each, these are trace-sized lines next to the studied amounts, and the sales page does not mention bromelain at all.

Numbness, tingling or burning that is new or worsening needs a clinician. NINDS describes how many different causes of peripheral neuropathy exist, which is why a label line cannot stand in for an exam. (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy) See neuropathy basics.

Before you buy07

What should you know before taking quercetin and bromelain in Nervecept?

Know that the amounts are small, the quercetin evidence is one small trial, and bromelain has no studied dose on the source we checked.

The label dose is one capsule daily with 8 oz of water, and it says not to exceed the recommended dose.

FAQ08

What do people ask about quercetin and bromelain?

A common question first: How much quercetin is in Nervecept? It and 5 more are answered below.

Every answer gives the short reply first and the reasoning after, with a source when we have one.

How much quercetin is in Nervecept?

Each Nervecept capsule lists 8 mg of quercetin, taken from Sophora japonica bud. At one capsule a day that is 8 mg daily, roughly 1.6% of the lowest dose, 500 mg, in the one small safety trial we cite. (Han et al., BMJ Open Resp Res 2020)

What dose of quercetin was studied?

One small trial of 9 patients tested 500, 1,000 and 2,000 mg a day, each for one week. It looked at safety, not joints or nerves, and the authors want safety confirmed over at least 6 months. (Han et al., BMJ Open Resp Res 2020)

Is there a studied dose of bromelain?

We found none. The NCCIH bromelain page we cite gives no dose, so the label's 8 mg has nothing to be compared with. We show it as n/a rather than guess a number. (NCCIH, Bromelain)

Does bromelain thin the blood?

The NCCIH page we cite names no drug interactions and does not say bromelain thins blood, so we will not claim it. It does advise telling a provider before use if you take any medicine. Ask your pharmacist if you take a blood thinner. (NCCIH, Bromelain) (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely)

Is bromelain safe with a pineapple allergy?

We found no source that settles this. Bromelain is an enzyme from the pineapple stem, so if you are allergic to pineapple, ask an allergist or doctor before taking Nervecept. The label lists shellfish as its allergen, not pineapple. (FDA, Food Allergies)

Does quercetin interact with medicines?

The one small trial we cite reported no drug interactions, but it did not test for them. That is an absence of data, not proof of safety. If you take any medicine, ask your pharmacist before starting. (Han et al., BMJ Open Resp Res 2020) (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely)
