MSM and Methionine in Nervecept: 8 mg Each Per Capsule
MSM and methionine in Nervecept are 8 mg each per capsule, one capsule a day. One small knee trial used 3,375 mg of MSM a day, so the capsule holds 0.24% of it. A methionine requirement of about 357 mg for a 70 kg adult is our illustration, which makes 8 mg about 2.2% of it.

What are MSM and methionine in Nervecept?
MSM and methionine in Nervecept are two 8 mg label lines: methylsulfonylmethane, an organic sulfur compound, and methionine, an essential amino acid.
MSM is sold for joint comfort. Methionine is a building block for proteins that the body takes mostly from food.
Together they add 16 mg, about 2% of the roughly 699 mg of listed ingredients in a capsule.
The sales page names methionine and describes it accurately as an essential amino acid. It does not name MSM, so that line is on the bottle only. (Nervecept sales page) The whole panel is on the Supplement Facts page.

What dose of MSM and methionine was studied compared with Nervecept?
One small knee trial used 3,375 mg of MSM a day for 12 weeks, so the 8 mg in Nervecept is 0.24% of it. The methionine yardstick is a requirement, not a trial dose.
For methionine we used the pooled minimum requirement, 5.1 mg per kilogram a day, and a 70 kg adult as our illustration. That gives about 357 mg, and 8 mg is about 2.2% of it. These studies tested the ingredients alone, not Nervecept.
| Name on the label | Methionine |
|---|---|
| What it is | Essential amino acid |
| Amount per capsule | 8 mg per capsule |
| Amount used in research | Minimum requirement 5.1 mg/kg a day in adults 60 and older (about 357 mg for 70 kg) |
| Label share of that amount | 2.2% of a 357 mg illustration for a 70 kg adult |
| Strength of evidence | An essential nutrient, mostly from food; no trial of added methionine for nerves found |
| Marketed or traditional use | Building block for proteins |
| Main caution | No upper limit is set in the paper we cite. |
| Note | The 357 mg figure is our calculation (5.1 mg x 70 kg), not a recommendation. |
| Name on the label | Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) |
|---|---|
| What it is | Organic sulfur compound |
| Amount per capsule | 8 mg per capsule |
| Amount used in research | 3,375 mg a day for 12 weeks (knee osteoarthritis, 49 people) |
| Label share of that amount | 0.24% of the 3,375 mg a day used in one trial |
| Strength of evidence | One small trial; authors say the gains were small |
| Marketed or traditional use | Sold for joint comfort |
| Main caution | No adverse events were recorded in that small trial. |
| Note | One small trial, not a review. |
The MSM figure compares the capsule with a dose that was tested for a condition. The methionine figure compares it with a nutritional minimum. Neither says what 8 mg does. See label amount vs studied dose for the method.
Research03
What did the MSM trial find?
One small trial of 49 adults with knee osteoarthritis found MSM improved physical function against placebo after 12 weeks, but not pain or stiffness. (Debbi et al., BMC CAM 2011)
The authors called the improvements small and said it is unclear whether they are clinically meaningful.
| Measure (WOMAC) | Result against placebo |
|---|---|
| Physical function | Improved by 14.6 mm (p = 0.04) |
| Total score | Improved by 15.0 mm (p = 0.03) |
| Pain | Not significant (p = 0.08) |
| Stiffness | Not significant (p = 0.08) |
The authors also noted a small sample and imbalances at the start. This is one small trial, so we cannot say studies show MSM works. It used 3,375 mg a day, and we cite nothing about larger amounts.

What is methionine, and is 8 mg of it meaningful?
Methionine is an essential amino acid: the body cannot make it, so it comes from food. In Nervecept, 8 mg is small next to the minimum requirement.
In healthy adults aged 60 and older, the pooled minimum requirement was 5.1 mg per kilogram a day. For 70 kg that is about 357 mg, which is our calculation, not a recommendation. (Paoletti et al., Nutrients 2023)
The paper gives 15 mg per kilogram a day as the current recommendation for methionine plus cysteine together.
Methionine supplies methyl groups and is a precursor for cysteine, which supports glutathione. The paper sets no upper limit. It notes that blood homocysteine rose with methionine intake but stayed within safe physiological ranges. (Paoletti et al., Nutrients 2023) We found no trial of added methionine for nerves.
Worked example: 8 mg divided by 357 mg is 0.022, or about 2.2%. Food supplies most methionine, so a capsule is not the main source.

Is MSM safe, and who should check first?
No adverse events were recorded in the one small MSM trial, but one trial of 49 people cannot settle safety, and we cite nothing on larger amounts. (Debbi et al., BMC CAM 2011)
Nervecept also holds glucosamine and chondroitin, which have been linked to more bleeding risk with warfarin and, for glucosamine, higher blood glucose. (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin)
Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed. A supplement is no reason to stop or change it.
- Blood thinner or diabetes medicine: ask your pharmacist before the first capsule.
- Shellfish allergy: the label says CONTAINS: Shellfish (Crayfish). (FDA, Food Allergies)
- Surgery coming: tell the surgeon and anesthesia team about every supplement. (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely)
- Pregnant, nursing or under 18: the label asks you to consult a physician.
The side effects page covers the whole label.
Nerve claims06
Does MSM help neuropathy?
We found no trial of MSM in neuropathy, and no supplement treats neuropathy. The one trial we cite studied knee osteoarthritis.
The label's starred lines, such as “Promotes Nerve Function”, carry the FDA statement that they have not been evaluated.
Neuropathy has many causes, and a doctor looks for the one that applies. (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy) If tingling or numbness is new or spreading, see neuropathy basics before you spend on any capsule.
Before you buy07
What should you know before taking MSM and methionine in Nervecept?
Know that both amounts are tiny next to what was studied, the MSM evidence is one small trial, and no trial tested the capsules.
The label dose is one capsule daily with 8 oz of water, and it says not to exceed the recommended dose.
How to take Nervecept covers timing. Pricing lists the packs we read on October 18, 2026, with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

What do people ask about msm and methionine?
A common question first: How much MSM is in Nervecept? It and 5 more are answered below.
Every answer gives the short reply first and the reasoning after, with a source when we have one.
How much MSM is in Nervecept?
Each Nervecept capsule lists 8 mg of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). At one capsule a day that is 8 mg daily, about 0.24% of the 3,375 mg a day used in the one small knee trial we cite. (Debbi et al., BMC CAM 2011)
What dose of MSM was studied?
One small trial gave 49 adults with knee osteoarthritis 1.125 g of MSM three times a day, 3.375 g in all, for 12 weeks. We found no other studied dose that we can verify, so we state only that one. (Debbi et al., BMC CAM 2011)
What is methionine?
Methionine is an essential amino acid, meaning the body cannot make it and must get it from food. It supplies methyl groups for methylation reactions and is a precursor for cysteine. (Paoletti et al., Nutrients 2023)
Is 8 mg of methionine meaningful?
It is small. A pooled minimum requirement of 5.1 mg per kilogram a day works out to about 357 mg for a 70 kg adult, our own calculation. Eight milligrams is about 2.2% of that, and food supplies most methionine. (Paoletti et al., Nutrients 2023)
Is MSM safe?
No adverse events were recorded in the one small trial we cite, but one trial of 49 people cannot settle safety. Ask a pharmacist or doctor if you take medicine, are pregnant or nursing, or are under 18. (Debbi et al., BMC CAM 2011)
Does MSM help neuropathy?
We found no trial of MSM in neuropathy. The one trial we cite studied knee osteoarthritis, and its authors called the gains small and of unclear clinical meaning. No supplement treats neuropathy. (Debbi et al., BMC CAM 2011) (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy)
